Key Events
Summary

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: The start of play was delayed by an hour due to a dry outfield and drizzle. Jasprit Bumrah, who had two deliveries left in the first over of the New Zealand innings, ended it by sensationally dismissing captain Tom Latham off the last delivery. New Zealand need to chase down a target of 107 to record their first Test win in India since 1989.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Rachin Ravindra followed up his first innings century by taking New Zealand home in the second
India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Rachin Ravindra followed up his first innings century by taking New Zealand home in the second

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: New Zealand beat India by eight wickets and thus recorded their first victory in a Test match in the country since 1988. Start of play was delayed by an hour due to drizzles and a wet outfield. Jasprit Bumrah had two deliveries left to bowl when the players were forced off the field by the umpires on Day 4 of the first Test between India and New Zealand at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. When the match resumed on Day 5, Bumrah ended the over with a peach that dismissed New Zealand captain Tom Latham in a sensational start for the hosts as they look for a victory despite all odds stacked against them....Read More

Bumrah then dismissed Conway as he bowled a long spell involving eight consecutive overs. However, Rachin Ravindra and Will Young then batted like a dream and took the game away from India. The pair put up more than 50 runs for the third wicket and got New Zealand close to their first Test victory in India since 1988.

New Zealand only faced four deliveries in their second innings, before rain stopped play. The visitors are at 0/0 and will be chasing a target og 107 runs against India on Day 5 of their ongoing first Test, in Bengaluru on Sunday. Tom Latham and Devon Conway will resume batting on Day 5, and Rohit Sharma will be eyeing some early wickets.

India's attempt at a comeback took them to 462 on Day 4 in their second innings, after posting only 46 in their first innings In response to India's 46, New Zealand posted 402 in their first innings. The hosts will also be disappointed, considering that at one point, they expected to post a bigger target. The collapse began when Sarfaraz Khan fell in the pre-Tea session, departing for 150 off 195 balls, followed by Rishabh Pant narrowly missing out on a ton. Pant registered 99 off 105 balls.

In the final session, India failed to show any intent and had to settle for a 107-run lead. For New Zealand, Matt Henry and Will O'Rourke took three-wicket hauls respectively. The hosts will be hoping to make 107 look like 250-plus on Sunday, but realistically they don't stand a chance. But the pitch could provide plenty of help to the pacers and spinners. Also, the lowest target ever defended successfully in a Test by India is 107 vs Australia in 2004.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: That's that from Bengaluru

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: What an extraordinary Test match we have had. Both sides exchanging big blows throughout the few days of cricket we got amid the rains. And at the end of it all, it is New Zealand who come out on top. India will be hurt by this. Rohit Sharma could be seen having a long conversation with Gautam Gambhir and Abhishek Nayar in the balcony while Ravichandran Ashwin was sitting and having lunch alone in the row in front of him, his face looking quite grim. He had a rare bad Test at home, the rarest of rare things. And that is exactly what can be said about this match from and Indian and Kiwi perspective as well, in two entirely different contexts of course. New Zealand go into the second match of this series leading 1-0. It will be held in Pune from Thursday, so a quick turnover. That's it from the Chinnaswamy, a memorable Test match full of quality and intensity. Ciao!

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Rachin Ravindra is the player of the match

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Now he may seem like an obvious choice for the award but a shout out to Will O'Rourke. He broke the back of the Indian lineup in the first innings with his 4/22 and then his hat-trick of wicket-maidens with the new ball undid all the good work of Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant and Virat Kohli. The Bengaluru crowd is not very happy seeing their home side but they give 'home boy' Rachin Ravindra a rousing ovation nonetheless. Excerpts of what Ravindra said:

“It's a nice city, was a nice wicket to bat on, guess odds are in my favour. (Footwork) It's a combination of form and preparation. As long as I'm clear and know my plan, it helps. Know when to go forward or back helps, so does getting into good positions. When you have six subcontinent Tests coming up, you do extra work - indoors, put some mats down, or head out and do some training. Luckily, it all worked out today. Was trying to get a feel of different pitches, red- and black soil while preparing in Chennai, and figure out what positions I can get in and guards I can take to different bowlers. it was a great set-up there, got an open wicket, different wickets, nets everyday, net bowlers everyday, invaluable experience. Grateful for those guys putting it on. I try to be in good positions to be able to score, open up areas. Want to rotate strike too, not necessarily attack. Having family is emotional, phone starts blowing up, crowd too. Makes it even more special.”

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: All smiles from Tom Latham

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: A beaming Tom Latham commended his bowlers for asking all the right questions of India in their second innings amidst the pressure. Excerpts of what he said:

“I think we were actually going to bat first as well. Good toss to lose in the end. We put the ball in the right areas and got the results. We knew India would come back at us in the third innings but the bowlers asked nice questions with the second new ball and got us back. The partnership between Rachin and Tim put up ahead when the game was in the balance. He has been fantastic at the international stage. Pace, bounce, ability to move the ball in the air and off the wicket. He was backed up by the veteran Southee and Matt Henry as well. We know the capability Tim had with the bat. Young guy, played Test cricket a few years ago and he's slotted into a new role he's not used to. Settled the nerves in our change room with the way he came out and batted today.”

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: ‘We’ve been here before but we will move forward,' says Rohit Sharma

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Not too often that Indian captain is called up to talk first in a presentation ceremony after a Test match in India. Here are excerpts of what he told Harsha Bhogle:

“It was a good effort with the bat in the second innings. We didn't bat well in the first innings. So knew what was ahead and couple of guys stood out. When you are 350 behind you can't think too much about it, just got to see the ball and bat. Couple of partnerships were really exciting to watch. We could have easily been bowled out cheaply but proud of the effort. Everyone is on the edge of the seat when those two bat. Rishabh left a few balls and then played shots. Sarfaraz showed great maturity as well. I said in my press conference that we knew it will be sticky early on but we didn't expect to be out for 46. New Zealand bowled well and we failed to respond to that. Games like these happen. We will move forward. We lost a game against England and won four games after that. We know exactly what is needed from each one of us.”

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: A match to remember for both sides

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Well one might wonder why it might be a Test to remember for India as they, well, lost it. But as stated earlier, not too many teams would be able to push the opposition to the limit the way India did yesterday and at certain points today after being all out for just 46 runs in their first innings. In a way, it shows that this is what a team has to do to dominate large parts of a Test match in India and win - they need to dismiss India for a record-low total, something that is obviously a rarity.

For New Zealand, it is a welcome return to form after a forgettable tour of Sri Lanka. It is a win that has increasingly seemed impossible for any visiting side over the last decade or so. England and Australia have defeated India in India in these last 10 or 11 years of the latter's dominance at home but neither side have arguably looked as far ahead at any point of those Test matches as New Zealand did at most points of this first Test.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: NEW ZEALAND END THEIR 36-YEAR WAIT

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Two singles off the first two balls of the 28th over from Jadeja gets New Zealand to within one run of victory. Young beats short third with a cut shot off the fourth ball and there it is. New Zealand have done something they haven't been able to do since 1988. They have beat India in India in a Test match. Only England and Australia have been able to do this since 2013. The fact that India took it to the last day and even looked favourites to win at some ponts on Day 4 despite being all out for 46 shows just how difficult it is to beat them at their home. But New Zealand have done it. Tom Latham, in his first match as full-time Test captain of New Zealand, has managed to beat India in a Test in India. How about that for a start to his tenure.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Ashwin given the ball at last

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Just 10 runs left to defend so, hey, why not. Rohit seems to have decided to keep the pacers out of it, the last thing India would want is an injury to Jasprit Bumrah at this juncture. The brilliant Ravindra on 38 off 42, Young on 37 off 58.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Ravindra sweeps Kuldeep emphatically fourth ball of the 23rd which was too full from Kuldeep, it races away to the boundary. He is batting like a dream. Takes a single last ball to keep strike. He is on 37 off as many balls, Will Young on 36 off 57.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: 50 partnership between Ravindra and Young, NZ in a hurry

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Ravindra caresses the second ball from Kuldep leg side to the boundary. Then he dances down the track to the fourth and sends the ball to the midwicket boundary. Works the next ball through midwicket again, Jaiswal gives chase and stops the ball at the boundary but the batters run three. That makes it 11 runs off the over. Ravindra has raced to 30 in 29 balls, Young on 33 off 53 balls. Partnership has now reached 50 in 52 balls.

New Zealand 85/2, need 22 to win

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: SIX! Kuldeep's first over ends in a big one from Young

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Well it's now drifted pretty far away from India. Only two runs in the last three overs and the crowd was slowly starting to increase the level of sound. And then Young charges to Kuldeep last ball of the 19th and sends it over midwicket for a six. He is on 33 off 50, Ravindra on 18 off 20.

New Zealand 73/2 in 19 overs, need 34 to win.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Another 9 runs from Jadeja, Siraj returns

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Desperate times, desperate measures. No way Bumrah could bowl a ninth consecutive over, Rohit probably knows that Ashwin is completely off colour. And so Siraj is handed the ball after having rested for just four over. New Zealand need less than 50 to win now and so the Indians probably there aren't many overs left in this match. Ravindra with a four off the fourth ball of the 16th, the first ball shoots and rolls along the floor under Jurel for four byes. New Zealand are steadily getting there now.

New Zealand 62/2, need 45 to win

Oct 20, 2024 11:34 AM IST

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: 9 runs from Jadeja's first, Bumrah to bowl his eighth over

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Jadeja starts off with a no ball. Young then gets back to back boundaries off the third and fourth balls. All of a sudden, a ton of pressure seems to have left the ground for New Zealand. Now in comes Bumrah for his eighth over on the trot. Rarely have we seen him bowling such a long spell.

New Zealand 52/2 in 14 overs, need 55 to win

Oct 20, 2024 11:25 AM IST

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Ravindra with two boundaries in that over

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Rachin Ravindra walks out and hits two fours, almost as if he is saying pressure, what pressure? He opens the face of the bat to the very first ball he faces with the crowd baying for his blood, pushes it through backward point for a four. Then he defends a short ball and then he clips the last ball through midwicket for another four.

Siraj has been taken off now, Ravindra Jadeja to bowl from the other end. This is the part of the game India would've dreaded.

New Zealand 43/2 in 13 overs

Oct 20, 2024 11:19 AM IST

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: OUT! Bumrah gets Conway!

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: STOP THE PRESS! MICHAEL GOUGH HAS GOT AN LBW DECISION WRONG! Just as New Zealand got a couple of quick boundaries off the last ball of the previous over from Siraj and second of this over from Bumrah, Conway falls. Huge shout from Bumrah and India third ball, Gough shakes his head. Kohli animatedly asks Rohit to take the review and the Indian captain does it. The ball seams in and then swings away so Conway is hit on the pads despite covering the line. Utterly unplayable stuff again from Bumrah, three reds and that is that.

Conway's tortured stay ends, Bumrah threatening with every ball but how long can he bowl? This is his seventh over on the trot. On comes first innings centurion Rachin Ravindra.

Conway lbw b Bumrah 17 (39)

New Zealand 35/2 in 12.3 overs, need 72 to win

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Dhruv Jurel with a sensational take...

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: How annoyed must Rohit Sharma be about the fact that India decided to go with just two pacers in this Test. Siraj and Bumrah are making the batters dance and thus far, they don't have too many replies. Good desperation in the field as well from India as they make sure NZ get just one run in the 10th and 11th overs. Maiden from Siraj in the 10th, Bumrah gets the first ball of the 11th to kick up on Conway, the batter gets off strike next ball and then Young gets beaten by the third and fourth balls. Jurel with an extraordinary take last ball, diving to his right despite being wrong footed and saving four byes.

New Zealand 22/1 in 11 overs, need 85 to win

Oct 20, 2024 11:02 AM IST

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Lucky four for Conway in Bumrah's fifth over

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: It is quite uncomfortable for the NZ batters but make no mistake, they are very much the side in control here. The two Indian pacers cannot keep bowling forever and the threat could fall off signifficantly when the spinners are brought in. Virat Kohli has taken the lead as far as keeping the decibel levels up around the batter is concerned. Sarfaraz Khan also seeing having a word with Conway. India know they need as many wickets as they can take from these pace overs. Conway got a thickish outside edge off the last ball as he made an utter mess of himself trying to fend off the last ball from Bumrah. It took an outside edge and somehow went to the boundary offside.

New Zealand 17/1 in 9 overs, need 90 to win

Oct 20, 2024 10:56 AM IST

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: FOUR! Young beats India's bluff

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: First boundary of the day comes from Young who looks like he is batting on a different pitch to his partner Devon Conway. Rohit brings in Sarfaraz at silly mid-off right in front Young for Siraj's last over of the day. Siraj goes into the pads though and Young reads it like a book. Flicks it away for the first four of the day, a very comfortable delivery for him to deal with.

New Zealand 13/1 in 8 overs, need 94 to win

Oct 20, 2024 10:50 AM IST

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Virat Kohli getting the crowd into it

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: It's a theatre today at the Chinnaswamy and how could Virat Kohli not get involved. The former RCB captain waves to the crowd to amp up the decibel levels and the Bengaluru faithful obliges. Kohli also chirping at the batter. It's a cauldron out there, Young looking calm and Conway looking jittery, both batters finding it very difficult indeed to score any kind of runs. One run off the seventh over. He got the third ball to jump up at Conway from a length and hit him on his top hand. Then a half volley fifth ball but even that swings away and beats the batter.

New Zealand 9/1 in 7 overs

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Every run having to be earned…

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: But this is also something that could hurt India. It is quite clear that New Zealand will look to see out Bumrah here. Will Young takes a single first ball of the fourth over, then huge seam movement off the second ball, it hits Conway's pads and the Indians appeal half-heartedly. The fourth jumps at Conway from a good length, then the batters run a very risky single fifth bal. Young glances the last ball past fine leg and the batters run two.

New Zealand 8/1 in 5 overs, need 102 to win

Oct 20, 2024 10:30 AM IST

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: No runs for NZ in the second over as well

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Well absolute scenes here at the Chinnaswamy. Celebrappeal from Siraj, huge appeals from his teammates and the crowd at the Chinnaswamy as well off the second ball of the second over from Siraj. The umpire shakes his head and India don't review. Conway pinned to the crease for the rest of the over again.

New Zealand 0/1 after 2 overs, need 107 to win

Oct 20, 2024 10:21 AM IST

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: OUT! BUMRAH STRIKES WITH HIS 2ND BALL OF THE DAY!

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Oh a ripper! An absolute peach from Bumrah and Tom Latham is gone for all money. The New Zealand captain reviews, and the ultra edge shows there was no bat so what in the world did he review it for? Latham offers the bat to cover the inswinger. But this swung and seamed in. Utterly unplayable for the New Zealand captain.

Latham lbw b Bumrah 0 (6)

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: The Indians walk out in their whites!

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Getting closer and closer to the start of the day now. India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Now the way the conditions are at the moment, it is quite possible that we could have a start time of 10am. However, there is also rain forecast at around 11.30am. Certainly not something that the NZ batters will be happy about. The main cover on the square has been taken off, sparking cheers from the sparse crowd.

The umpires will do an inspection at 9.45am.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: When India defended 107...

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Almost exactly 20 years ago, India had to defend a target of 107 against Ricky Ponting's world beating Australian. And well, they went and did it. Harbhajan Singh took five wickets while Murali Kartik took three as Australia were all out for 93 runs. The difference between then and now is the pitch though. The surface at the Wankhede Stadium was horrendous and it drew a lot of flak in the days since. That cannot be said about the pitch at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Start delayed!

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Did Rishabh Pant's six turn the game against India

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: As stated earlier, Rishabh Pant made jaws drop on the floor everywhere by hitting a 107m monster six. It has to be stated that Pant and Rahul had navigated the second new ball quite well between them after New Zealand took it as soon as it was available in the 80th over. In fact, Pant hit that giant six off this same new ball but the one that caused India's collapse wasn't the same. The ball had been hit out of the park by Pant, way over the roof, possibly landing near a group of people having a nice day out at Cubbon Park and surprising them. This meant that the umpires had to use a replacement ball and well, those tend to have a weird effect on matches. This new second new ball seemed to move way more off the seam than the previous one. Boom and crash, India collapsed. So if you are seeing a lot of assesment of how poor the likes of Rahul/Jadeja/Ashwin (or all three) are for collapsing the way they did, do listen to them with a pinch of salt. Test cricket is a complex sport and not everything is down to a batter's deficiencies.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Things getting slowly brighter, says Saba Karim

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: But don't get carried away by that. The former wicketkeeper also said on Jio Cinema that there is still the odd drop of rain here and there. The ground remains under covers. We can see some players out on the field, Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel are having some light-hearted conversations with some of the officials there.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Will O'Rourke's wicket-maiden hat-trick

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: India were flying high when New Zealand had the old ball. And then, the visitors broke their backs with the new cherry and big man O'Rourke played a major role in that. The fast bowler dismissed Pant on 99 with the first ball of the 89th over. He then got KL Rahul in his next over and then Ravindra Jadeja in the one after that. All three overs were wicket-maidens as well.

Oct 20, 2024 8:23 AM IST

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Rishabh Pant's 107m monster six

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Glenn Phillips couldn't help but let his jaw drop to the floor, KL Rahul looked at the ball and then looked back at the striker's end with a disbelieving look before cracking out a smile. Rishabh Pant was at his aggressive best yesterday and this shot probably personified that more than anything else.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: The drainage system at the Chinnaswamy Stadium

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Memories of a Test match all being washed off due to a stadium having no drainage facilities is quite fresh in the minds of Indian fans. It almost happened at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur during the second Test between India and Bangladesh and it did happen in Greater Noida where a Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand couldn't take place. Shortly on the heels of those sights, comes the Chinnaswamy Test, where the ground gets ready just minutes after rain has stopped because of a good drainage system underneath it.

However, the umpires decided that the light wasn't good enough after the fourth ball and this led to some animated discussions from Rohit, Virat Kohli and the rest of the Indian team with the umpires. The umpires, for their part, were having none of it and their decision was vindicated just a few minutes later. Almost as soon as the Indian players dragged their feet to the dressing room, the rain started coming down in sheets. So heavy was it that the drops could be heard in the broadcast, which is something that doesn't normally happen. The ground staff who had come on to place the covers after the umpires called the proceedings off due to bad light had to go scampering for cover themselves.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Weather forecast for Day 5

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: The best chance India have at avoiding defeat in this match is for the last day to get washed out. The forecast for the day does make it look like this chase might turn out to be a tricky one for New Zealand. The Indian met department's forecast, not long after a downpour ended play early on the fourth day, said Bengaluru will have "generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers" on Sunday, while Accuweather's forecast promised "thunderstorms in the area late Saturday night through Sunday evening".

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: The match situation

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: India are facing an extraordinary situation where they scored 462 runs in their second innings and still are now complete underdogs in this Test. The brilliant Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant put up 177 runs for the fourth wicket off 211 balls and it looked like India might just set a target close to 250 for New Zealand. And then, came the collapse. KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin were all expected to add the necessary finishing touches but they had to deal with a brand new ball, instead of what is usually the case where they face a ball that is about 20 overs old. Rahul fell for 12, Jadeja for five and Ashwin for 15 as India were all out for 462, despite being 408/3 at one point. This means that New Zealand have a target of just 107 runs to chase.

India vs New Zealand Live Score 1st Test Day 5: Rachin Ravindra and Will O'Rourke are certainly names that have been added to the list of Kiwi players who Indian fans grudgingly love. Love because they are really good at what they do, grudgingly because they did that to India.
